Deformations of complex structures and the coupled K\"ahler-Yang-Mills equations

In this work we define a deformation theory for the Coupled K\"ahler-Yang-Mills equations in arXiv:1102.0991, generalizing work of Sz\'ekelyhidi on constant scalar curvature K\"ahler metrics. We use the theory to find new solutions of the equations via deformation of the complex structure of a polarised manifold endowed with a holomorphic vector bundle. We also study the deformations of the recent examples of Keller and T{\o}nnesen-Friedman.Comment: 19 page

Infinitesimal moduli for the Strominger system and Killing spinors in generalized geometry

We construct the space of infinitesimal variations for the Strominger system and an obstruction space to integrability, using elliptic operator theory. We initiate the study of the geometry of the moduli space, describing the infinitesimal structure of a natural foliation on this space. The associated leaves are related to generalized geometry and correspond to moduli spaces of solutions of suitable Killing spinor equations on a Courant algebroid. As an application, we propose a unifying framework for metrics with holonomy \SU(3) and solutions of the Strominger system.Comment: 48 pages. Section 5 and Appendix A from previous version have been suppressed and will appear elsewhere. Title slightly changed, references added, presentation improved. To appear in Math. Anna

AA-stacked bilayer square ice between graphene layers?

Water confined between two layers with separation of a few Angstrom forms layered two- dimensional ice structure. Using large scale molecular dynamics simulations with the adoptable ReaxFF interatomic potential we found that flat monolayer ice with a rhombic-square structure nucleates between graphene layers which is non-polar and non-ferroelectric. Two layers of water are found to crystallize into a square lattice close to the experimental found AA-stacking [G. Algara- Siller et al. Nature 519, 443445 (2015)]. Each layer has a net dipole moment which are in opposite direction. Bilayer ice is also non-polar and non-ferroelectric. For three layer ice we found that each layer has a crystal structure similar to monolayer ice

Katherine Anne Porter : a change in her Mexican perspective

Katherine Anne Porter regards Mexico as her familiar country. lndeed, Mexico in the art of this gifted American writer is more important than generally believed for, as William Nance says, Mexico entered into her earliest work as both motivating force and subject matter. Miss Porter has traveled extensively in Mexico and lived there on several occasions. Her highly developed artistic sensibility has allowed her to gain more than a mere familiarity with the country, its inhabitants, and its history. Naturally, her deep knowledge of the culture is reflected in her artistic production, part of which is devoted exclusively to Mexico. This thesis presents a brief study of Miss Porter\u27s fiction which deals with that country: it attempts to demonstrate a change in the author\u27s perspective of it, evinced in those stories that have Mexico as a setting: namely, it shows how Miss Porter starts out deeply involved with the culture in the stories of \u27\u27Maria Concepcion , The Martyr , and Virgin Violeta , and how, slowly, the theme of alienation evolves in the stories Flowering Judas\u27,\u27 That Tree , and Hacienda , interpreted as Miss Porter\u27s disillusionment with the failure of the Mexican Revolution. This study intends to contribute to the field of Inter-American Studies in the sense that it deals directly with inter-cultural relations within the North American continent and with the understanding between cultures, seen through the eyes of a most accomplished writer. If there is a person who could be called truly inter-American, Miss Porter would be the perfect model, because she embodies the ideals of understanding between the different cultures of the North American continent
